Reading Notes Celtic Fairy Tales: Part B

The Leprechaun from the horror movie " Leprechaun " For the last week I will most likely be doing reading in this class I chose to do my first bit of reading over Celtic tales. I knew a little about them from reading short stories by myself in the past and enjoyed many aspects of them. I am going to do my part A reading post over one of my favorite stories I read from the section, "The Field of Boliauns". In this story there is a man that happens upon a Leprechaun. Now Leprechaun's are very shifty and resilient creatures so the man knew that he could not take his eyes off of him or else he would be gone, never to see the little man again. The Leprechaun tried to trick the man to making him turn around and lose sight of him so he could get away, out of his sight. These efforts surprisingly didn't work. Extra Credit Reading Notes Part B: Coyote and Grizzly

I chose to do an extra credit reading assignment this week because I really wanted to read more on the Native American section in the Untextbook, so I figured I might as well write up a little blog post about my favorite story I came across. I really enjoyed the story "Coyote and Grizzly" from the Pacific Northwest region. It was about a very mean grizzly bear that was so mean and rotten that he one day went down and began eating Indians. He ate so many that he made himself ill and had to seek help from the medicine man, Coyote. Coyote ended up helping the bear but found out what made him sick and told on him. The Grizzly became so enraged that he tried to kill the Coyote. Coyote was very cunning however and and ended up tricking the bear and killing it. I really liked this story because it showed how cunning and smart the Coyote is, that he could outwit and out battle the toughest of animals. Week 11 Story: The Lovers that Killed the Warrior's

An African figure of a man using a bow and arrow. A long time ago there lived two different tribes in Africa. There located fairly close to one another but were separated by a large river. For many decades the two had been at war with each other. Each tribe hated the other more than anything in the world. This all changed one day when the prince of the Gondula tribe, known by many around to be some of the most ferocious warriors, caught a glimpse of a daughter of the rival tribe the Halla's. The Halla's were well knows throughout the continent as a kind people, always willing to trade and help, besides with the Gondula that is. One the prince had seen the young girl he new he had to have her. The king was all to happy for this arrangement hoping that it would bring peace to the two tribes. The king was right and once the two were wed there was a time of peace and tranquility between the two tribes. The king's daughter remarkably was fine with the arranged marriage and...

Reading Notes Inuit: Part B

Inuit Family Telling Stories and Cooking For my second reading this week I chose to continue on reading in the Inuit section of the unit. I was very fond of the story "The Wife Who Lied". I think that it had a very powerful meaning behind it. While reading the story I found myself thinking that I could actually see the Inuit elders talking telling this to the young peoples of their community. This would instill in them that you should never lie, for the consequences could be dire. Although I loved the story as a whole and the meaning behind it, I would have to change some things up myself if i retold it. For instance, I would have to give greater background detail about how the young woman found herself to be wed to a different tribe. Also, I would continue to elaborate about how great the young man or chief that took her to be his bride was to her. This would great more of a betrayal and more of a reason for the members of the trade be willing to work so hard to get r...

Reading Notes Inuit Folk-Tales: Part A

This week, the final week of the Native American folklore section, I have chose to do my first reading over the Inuit tribes. I have read that the Inuit do not like the term Eskimo because it is a derogatory word must like red man is here on the Great Plains, so I will refer to the people as Inuit's in this blog. Anyways, I have read the part A section of the Inuit folk-tails and I would have to say my favorite story was "The Giant Dog". It was my favorite for a couple of reasons. One, it was a classic Indian folk-tale. Two, it seems to me that there was many other tangents that one could take in this story to give it more character and meaning. For me, I would start by elaborating on the man and the giants dog's initial friendship. Where did the dog come from? Why did the dog allow the man to tame him and ride him as he wished? These question would first be answered, giving some more background to the story. Next, I would develop more detail into why the giant dog wa...
